The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986. The group achieved moderate success, but their blend of surf rock, punk, and alternative was influential on the alternative rock boom of the early '90s. Known for their dynamic "loud-quiet-loud" song structures, the Pixies' music also incorporated elements of psychedelia, noise pop, and hard rock. Their unique sound and unconventional approach to songwriting paved the way for many subsequent alternative bands.
