The Hottest Week in the Ruhr Area

Over 60 shows in a single week – the Ruhr area is literally exploding! From Essen's own thrash legends at the Grugahalle to a black metal festival with 19 bands to post-punk hidden gems in Cologne's underground. Here are the highlights.

The Heavy Hitters

On Saturday, Grugahalle Essen becomes the thrash metal epicenter: Kreator are coming home! The Essen thrash legends bring their "Krushers Of The World Tour" with a lineup that's hard to beat: Carcass (death metal/grindcore originators), Exodus (old-school Bay Area thrash) and Nails (powerviolence brutality). This isn't just a show – it's a hometown triumph.

Meanwhile, Culthe Fest at Sputnikhalle Münster unleashes a black metal inferno with 19 acts. Melechesh bring their unique Mesopotamian black metal, The Great Old Ones channel Lovecraftian cosmic horror, and with local heroes Ultha and Yellow Eyes, finest atmospheric black metal is guaranteed.

Wednesday gets dark at Die Kantine Köln: IAMX are an absolute force in dark electronic music – intense shows between industrial, darkwave and theatrical drama.

Underground Gems & Local Heroes

On Tuesday, local heroes Bleeding Ocean play Blue Shell Köln – doom metal from the neighborhood, intimate and crushing. Saturday brings Arrested Denial with Kommando Marlies (also local!) at Indie Duisburg for a proper punk night.

Thrash fans take note: Wednesday sees Lich King and Gama Bomb crossing swords at the intimate Trompete Bochum – an old-school thrash double bill guaranteed to escalate in this tiny venue.

From Noise Terror to Stoner Doom

Full Of Hell and The Body bring their uncompromising noise terror to Gebäude 9 Köln on Friday. Wednesday sees Nova Twins flooding Zeche Carl Essen with bass-heavy punk rock – pure energy!

For darkwave fans: Mesh play Kulttempel Oberhausen Thursday with their unmistakable synthpop. Saturday delivers a post-punk/EBM party at Grend Essen with Zack Zack Zack, Plastikstrom and Staatseinde.

Sunday wind-down: Stoned Jesus and Wheel at Luxor Köln – stoner doom meets prog metal. And Helvete Oberhausen delivers the perfect finale with Disquiet and Man As Plague.
