94 Shows This Week in the Ruhr Area
Whoever said Wednesday is a quiet day clearly hasn't seen this week: 94 confirmed concerts crash through the Ruhr area, Cologne, Münster and Bielefeld – from post-metal in a cinema to three days of underground thrash at Turock. Here are the highlights.
Wednesday: Hometown Openers
Two very different hometown gigs kick off the week. Long Distance Calling play Lichtburg Essen – yes, in the cinema. The post-metal band from Münster returns to NRW, and the cinematic hall is the perfect frame for their wide instrumental soundscapes. Local hero, must-see.
Same night at Druckluft Oberhausen: Waldgeflüster bring atmospheric black metal from the Bavarian Forest, with Asagraum (Dutch occult BM) and Enisum (Italian mountain melancholia) in support. Three bands who actually live the genre.
Thursday: Festival Kickoff & Punk Double
Thursday kicks off one of the most exciting underground events of the week: the Dying Victims Attack! 4 festival. Three days, two venues: warm-up at Don't Panic with Abyssous, Friends Of Hell, Hexxema and Templar. Day 1 and Day 2 at Turock with Barbarian, Gallower, Morbyda, Pandemic, The Riven, Time Rift and more. Speed, thrash, black, heavy metal – no nonsense, just riffs.
Also Thursday: Zeke (US garage punk) at Pitcher Düsseldorf, Witch Fever (UK punk) at Artheater Köln, and About Monsters (local heroes!) at MTC Köln.
Friday: Synth, Death & Festival Day 1
The biggest name on Friday is Mesh at Carlswerk Victoria Köln. The British synthpop duo from Bristol have been making dark electronic pop since 1996 – somewhere between synthwave hooks and industrial weight. Mandatory for the dark scene.
Right next door at Essigfabrik: Panzer AG bring their EBM/industrial assault. At Kulttempel Oberhausen Diorama deliver German future-pop royalty.
For the death metal contingent: In Vain at Junkyard Dortmund – Norwegian progressive death metal, supported by Iotunn (Danish/Faroese) and Nephylim (Netherlands). Three bands proving extreme can also be epic and complex.
Saturday: The Densest Day of the Week
If you have to pick one night, make it Saturday. The biggest name: From Ashes To New at Gebäude 9 Köln – modern metal from Pennsylvania, blending metalcore with hip-hop energy.
In Bochum, Fiddler's Green play Christuskirche Hiltrop. Irish speedfolk in a church – this will be legendary, and definitely sold out.
Hardcore fans head to Turbinenhalle Oberhausen: One Step Closer from Pennsylvania bring straight-edge melodic hardcore at its best.
And the hometown highlight of the day: Elvellon from Moers (⚡ local heroes!) headline Helvete Oberhausen with Snow White Blood and Deep Sun. Symphonic metal with cinematic flair – in the smallest, hardest club in town it gets up close and personal.
For the dark scene there are three options: Traitrs (Canadian post-punk) at Movie Bielefeld, Klangstabil (German EBM/IDM) at Blue Shell Köln, and Panzer AG again at Matrix Bochum.
Sunday: Quieter Wind-Down
Sunday is calmer – but not empty. The Sweet (yes, the originals) play Jovel Münster with their glam-rock classics, and South Korean all-female rock band Rolling Quartz deliver power-pop-punk perfection at Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld Köln.
