Valentine's Weekend with Bite: Streetpunk, Darkwave and Metal in the Ruhr

Over 30 shows across three days – while others are buying roses for Valentine's Day, we've got moshpits, dark synthesizers and walls of guitar. From Italian streetpunk in Bochum to darkwave in Essen to industrial metal at Matrix – here are the highlights.

Friday: Streetpunk Legends Meet Pagan Metal

Friday belongs to the Italians: Los Fastidios are playing at Die Trompete in Bochum. For over 30 years, the Verona-based band has stood for uncompromising streetpunk with ska influences and political attitude – the intimate Trompete is the perfect setting to experience that up close.

Meanwhile in Hameln, it's pagan power all the way: Nachtblut and Asenblut at Sumpfblume – dark metal meets epic pagan metal in one night. Nachtblut are listed as local heroes and an absolute force on stage.

If you'd rather stay in the Ruhr area: Blossom Cult are bringing psychedelic stoner rock to Parkhaus Duisburg-Meiderich, transforming the venue's industrial charm into a sonic journey. At Helvete Oberhausen, Snakebite deliver classic metal – the Helvete is exactly as raw and honest as metal should be. And Nitrogods bring their no-frills rock'n'roll metal to Vinylcafe Dorsten.

Saturday: Valentine's Day Between Darkwave and Moshpit

February 14th, but not as you know it: instead of candlelight, there's Sixth June at Grend Kulturzentrum Essen – darkwave and cold wave for a dark-romantic Valentine's meltdown. If you'd rather spend the evening with synthesizers than love songs, this is your place.

For the heavier crowd, Mechanical Vein take over Matrix Bochum with their brutally electronic industrial metal, while Words Of Farewell bring technically brilliant melodic death metal with emotional force to Sputnik Cafe Düsseldorf.

The insider tip of the weekend: Illegale Farben at Spunk Gelsenkirchen. This post-punk band from the Ruhr area is a local hero through and through – and a gig at a youth center always has that special DIY charm. Plus, Underdogz are playing Don't Panic Essen – hardcore on Valentine's Day, what more could you want?

Sunday: Carnival of Chaos

The weekend wraps up with CARNIVAL OF CHAOS at Pitcher Düsseldorf featuring Drown In Embers and Signs Of Wear – two rising acts from the region proving that the local scene is alive and thriving.
