Marillion entstand in den frühen 80er Jahren in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, als einer der führenden Vertreter der Neo-Progressive-Rock-Bewegung. Die frühen Werke der Gruppe waren stark von Genesis beeinflusst, entwickelten aber allmählich ihren eigenen Sound. Mit dem charismatischen Fish als Leadsänger erreichte Marillion bedeutende kommerzielle Erfolge, insbesondere in Großbritannien und Europa. Nach Fishs Ausscheiden im Jahr 1988 übernahm Steve Hogarth den Gesang und führte die Band in eine etwas poppigere Richtung, wobei sie ihre progressiven Wurzeln beibehielt. Marillion hat eine treue Fangemeinde und nimmt weiterhin Platten auf und tourt ausgiebig.
