Savatage is an American heavy metal band formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1979. Initially known as Avatar, they gained prominence in the 1980s with a blend of traditional heavy metal and progressive elements. The band is known for its conceptual albums and theatrical performances. Following the death of guitarist Criss Oliva in 1993, his brother Jon Oliva continued the band with a shifting lineup, eventually leading to the formation of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Savatage has been influential in the development of progressive metal and is known for its complex compositions and emotional depth.
