Vikings in a club, Satan in Zurich and two nights at Helvete
This week brings 872 shows in 289 cities across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, plus 19 festivals in Germany. Saturday alone has 283 concerts. The week has it all: one of the biggest metal bands in the world in a 500-capacity club, a black metal double bill in Zurich and two nights at Helvete you shouldn't miss.
This Week's Heavy Hitters
The wildest show comes on Tuesday in Essen. Amon Amarth present their new album "The Allfather Awakens", out on 2 October, at Zeche Carl – an exclusive release show, 500 tickets, sold only as a bundle with the CD or vinyl. Sold out, of course. Whoever made it in gets a signing session afterwards.
On Friday it's all on at Halle 622 in Zurich-Oerlikon: Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir co-headline the "In League With Satan Tour", with Dark Funeral opening. The same night Belphegor and Krisiun bring their "Praise The Beast" tour to Musikbrauerei in Berlin. On Sunday Mayhem close the week at Löwensaal in Nuremberg, with their new album "Liturgy Of Death" in tow and Marduk as special guests.
In between, plenty of thrash and brutality: Coroner open the week on Monday at Chemiefabrik in Dresden ("Thrash Titans Vol. III"), on Wednesday Shadow of Intent and Aborted bring deathcore to Fabrik in Hamburg, and on Thursday Essigfabrik in Cologne becomes a grindcore summit: Nails with Wolfbrigade and Rotten Sound. On Tuesday Laibach show their new live programme at Zeche Bochum.
Underground Gems and Hidden Tips
Helvete in Oberhausen opens its doors twice. On Friday The Spirit from Saarbrücken play melodic black metal, with Cryptosis from Enschede in support. On Sunday Misþyrming from Reykjavík arrive on their "All Worlds in Decay" tour, with Necrowretch – Icelandic black metal in a club this size is a gift.
Hamburg goes Norwegian: Mork play Hafenklang on Saturday and From Hell in Erfurt on Sunday, both times with Soulburn as special guests. In the Black Forest, Black Forest Fest celebrates its ninth edition at Kulturzentrum Klosterhof in Villingen-Schwenningen: Bullet on Friday, Pagan Altar and Firmament from Leipzig on Saturday – heavy metal in its purest form.
If you like it slower: Keep It Low Festival at Backstage in Munich brings Slomosa on Friday, then 1000mods, Causa Sui and desert rock veterans Yawning Man on Saturday.
From Hardcore to Darkwave – Something for Everyone
Monday belongs to hardcore: Integrity celebrate 30 years of "Humanity Is The Devil" at Goldgrube in Kassel, and Ringworm mark 25 years of "Birth Is Pain". On Wednesday Raised Fist close their "Anthems" cycle at Columbia Theater in Berlin, while Slope from Duisburg kick off their "Same Kids. Just Louder." tour at Essigfabrik in Cologne – then Hanover, Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig.
It gets darker early in the week: The Sisters Of Mercy play E-Werk in Cologne on Monday. On Thursday Bohren & der Club of Gore from Mülheim bring their doom jazz to the Kesselhalle at Schlachthof in Bremen, and Asp take the stage at Backstage Werk in Munich with songs from the upcoming "HORRORS 2". On Saturday Girls Under Glass celebrate 40 years as a band at Markthalle in Hamburg – with surprise guests.
