The First KRACH Week for All of Germany

We started out in the Ruhrgebiet, with shows between Bochum, Essen and Cologne. From this week on we're showing you the whole country: 270 shows in 108 cities, from Flensburg down to Konstanz. And what a week to start with.

The Week's Heavy Hitters

Monday belongs to the far north: Soulfly bring the Tribal Technology Tour to the Roxy in Flensburg. Groove metal doesn't get any further up the German map.

From Thursday it gets literally cavernous. Prophecy Fest turns the Balver Höhle in the Sauerland into Europe's largest concert hall carved from rock, three days running. Tiamat play "Wildhoney" in full on Friday — the album that took the Swedes from death metal into the gothic fog back in 1994. On Saturday Misþyrming bring Icelandic black metal into the stone.

Eastwards, the weekend belongs to doom: Candlemass play their only German show of the year at Break Out Open Air in Crispendorf. In Halle an der Saale, In Extremo stage their own "Weckt die Toten" festival on Saturday, with Subway to Sally, Wind Rose and Manntra. And Helstar bring Texan power metal to the Markthalle Hamburg on Wednesday.

It stays loud out west too: at Wassenrock in Wassenberg, Mystic Prophecy headline Friday and Emil Bulls Saturday — under 45 minutes from Düsseldorf, Cologne and Aachen.

Düsseldorf Twice Over, in Münster

The finest coincidence of the week: on the same open-air ground at the Halle Münsterland, Düsseldorf's two biggest punk bands play within three days of each other. First Die Toten Hosen on Wednesday — sold out, with Gogol Bordello supporting. Then BROILERS on Friday, alongside Betontod from Rheinberg. A one-two from NRW, 60 kilometres north of home.

Berlin gets its own slice of punk history: Buzzcocks celebrate 50 years on Saturday — the show has moved from Astra to Lido, existing tickets stay valid. Meanwhile WSTR from Liverpool take on the entire map: Thursday at the Ratinger Hof in Düsseldorf, Friday Leipzig, Saturday Egelsbach, Sunday Kassel.

The hidden gem, though, is in Essen. Raven, NWOBHM originals since 1974, play Don't Panic on Sunday — a club that doesn't hold 200 people. The same evening, Chuck Ragan plays his only German date at the Schlachthof Bremen: Hot Water Music songs, acoustic. And at Cologne's Palladium, The Black Keys close the week out with blues rock.

From Post-Punk to Industrial

Modern English bring "I Melt With You" to Cologne on Thursday — moved from Gebäude 9 to the MTC. On Friday, ACTORS from Vancouver play their icy darkwave at Berlin's Lido. And to close, Die Krupps appear on Sunday at the Nocturnal Culture Night in Deutzen: Düsseldorf's industrial pioneers, 45 years after forming, at Germany's most important dark-scene festival.
